What is an Americano?

An Americano consists of espresso that is diluted with the same amount of hot water. The resulting flavor, with its gentle and mild notes, is reminiscent of filter coffee. In terms of strength, an Americano and filter coffee are very similar. Since the Americano has a larger volume than an espresso, it can be enjoyed for a longer time.

Where does the Americano come from?

The Americano owes its name to the drink that American soldiers drank in Italy during the Second World War. The traditional Italian espressos were too strong for the soldiers, as they were used to the milder American coffee. By diluting the espresso with water, a flavor was created that reminded them of home. And that’s how the Americano was born!

Americano vs. Lungo: the differences

Americano and Lungo are similar because both consist of espresso and water, but the difference lies in the preparation. For an Americano, an espresso is prepared first and then topped up with hot water, resulting in a milder and less intense flavor. A Lungo, on the other hand, is made by letting the water run through the coffee grounds for a longer time, which creates a larger volume and a fuller taste with a slightly bitter finish. In short: an Americano is mild and diluted, while a Lungo is intense and aromatic.

The preparation of the Americano

The Americano is traditionally prepared in two simple steps:

  1. Extract espresso
  2. Add hot water (usually 120–180 ml)
This order is important because it affects the taste: When the water is added after the espresso, the aromas blend completely and create a consistently mild flavor profile.
