Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, offering an enormous variety of flavours and preparation methods. In this short FAQ, we answer the most common questions about brewing, storing, and enjoying tea.

1. Does tea contain caffeine?

Yes, most types of tea contain caffeine, also known as theine. In general, the amount is about half of what you find in coffee — on average around 25 mg per decilitre. Green tea often contains slightly less caffeine than black tea.

2. Does tea have a diuretic effect?

In normal amounts (up to about 4–5 cups per day), tea does not have a noticeably diuretic effect. Only when consumed in larger quantities — around 6–10 cups daily — might it be advisable to drink additional water to compensate for fluid loss.

3. Does tea contain tannic acid?

No, tea does not contain tannic acid, although this is a common misconception. The bitter taste of tea actually comes from natural antioxidants called flavonoids. These not only create the characteristic flavour but also offer health benefits. Flavonoids are also the reason for the dark stains that sometimes form on the inside of a teacup.

4. How should tea be stored?

Store tea in an airtight container in a dry, dark, and cool place. Avoid direct sunlight, moisture, and strong odours. A sealed storage tin kept in a kitchen cabinet or drawer is ideal for maintaining flavour and aroma.

5. Can you drink too much tea?

Drinking tea is generally safe. However, large amounts of black tea can affect your teeth and slightly influence iron absorption due to the flavonoids it contains. If you enjoy drinking a lot of tea — meaning more than 6 cups per day — it’s a good idea to switch between different types. For example, also drink green tea, white tea, or herbal tea. This way, you can continue enjoying your cup of tea without worry.
